More Information
Elphinstone Reef well deserves its reputation as one of the most amazing dives in Egypt. However, to be able to dive Elphinstone Reef, you need to have a bit of luck on your side to create the perfect conditions. If there is too much wind or current, you won't be able to dive.
Dives start towards the northern end of the oval shaped reef over a low plateau before descending down to the top of the reef. Divers usually wait at this point to look out for the various large marine animals that visit Elphinstone Reef including barracuda and various types and sizes of sharks. Oceanic whitetips are regularly seen in the winter when the weather is not quite as good.
You then ascend to one side of the reef or the other where you will come across amazing walls of soft and black corals with too many fish to begin to count. These include coral trout, pipefish, jacks, angels and tangs.
When you reach 15 metres, Elphinstone Reef changes once again to a cover of perfect hard corals with schools of snapper and free swimming morays floating around.
This is a must dive site if the conditions are right!
