The Giannis D was a 100m long Freighter carrying softwood from Croatia to Saudi Arabia. In April 1983, the Giannis struck the corner of the Abu Nuhas Reef and sank -no lives were lost.
The Giannis D now lies in 3 separate sections parallel to the reef at a maximum depth of 26m. The stern and bridge at the main highlights and divers can enter into the engine room and see the fully intact 6 cylinder diesel engine.
The wreck is now alive with brightly coloured hard and soft corals attracting al sorts of marine including moray eels, scorpionfish, sea stars, reef fish and Napoleon wrasse. Divers commonly see pods of dolphins swimming above the wreck at sunset.
