More Information
The stretch through the Straits of Gubal leads towards the Suez Canal and is a world-renowned shipping graveyard, home to one of the best wreck dives in the world; HMS Thistlegorm.
The HMS Thistlegorm was a British vargo vessel that sank after being bombed in World War 2, en-route with supplies for troops. There are holds full of supplies including Motorbikes and car engines that never reached their final destination.
The diving conditions at HMS Thistlegorm are extremely variable. On a good day, the calm waters are perfect for almost any diver (with a certification over 25 metres), but when the ocean swells kick in and the wind picks up, this is not a place for the novice diver.
The hull of the HMS Thistlegorm lies upright at 30 metres, almost completely intact. You descend down a line attached to the forward section of the wreck and when you reach the bottom, follow your dive guide into some of the holds and then down towards the stern where you can explore the propellor, crew quarters and some anti-aircraft guns.
The wreck is home to a vast array of corals and fish life, maximum depth is around 25m but currents can be strong.
