More Information
The HMS Hildasay sunk in June, 1945. This armed steam trawler was sent to help the Kenya Royal Navy volunteer reserve during WWII.
Whilst helping her sister ship, HMS Shapinsay, she ran aground on the reef, all crew were rescued. She now sits at about 22m partially intact. Part of the bridge washed ashore and was used to build a house in Sand Island overlooking the wreck. The wreck itself is not the most exciting of wrecks to explore but it does attract many interesting fish and coral forming an integral part of the reef.
