Diving Overview for South Africa
South Africa is the paradise for shark lovers! Starting with Great white shark diving around the Dyer Islands on the South East of the Cape of Good Hope, diving with sand tiger sharks in the region of Durban not forgetting the great hammerhead and whaleshark.
The reefs and wrecks of Aliwal Shoal, Protea Banks and Rocky Bay offer diving with a variety of sharks, rays, turtles, eels, dolphins, nudibranchs as well as tropical and pelagic fish species.
Thanks to warm water coming down from Mozambique, there is a variety of sea life around Sodwana including bottle-nosed dolphins, sharks, whale sharks and turtles.
The Atlantic is cooled by the Benguela current coming up from the southern Atlantic which brings with it water rich in micro-organisms. This explains the huge kelp forests found in the Atlantic as well as the fish, seals and whales which feed on all the smaller animals; False Bay is influenced by the tail end of the warmer Mozambique current which moves Southwards down the East coast of Africa.
