Diving Overview for Cambodia
Cambodia sits in the Gulf of Thailand between Thailand and Vietnam. Cambodia is rich in history and culture and is pretty new to diving. There are a few dive centres offering a really chance to explore the much undiscovered waters of Cambodia.
Most diving is located around Shanoukville (also known as Kompong Som) which a growing tourist area, perfect for diving and relaxing; there are beautiful white sand beaches wrapping around the headland and clear waters for snorkeling and diving. The better diving is near the islands as parts of hte coast have been destroyed by dynamite.
Just off shore from Shanoukville are the Kompong Som Island group (the 3 islands of Koh Rong, Koh Kon and Koh Rong Samloem). Local snorkeling trips often take groups to visit small islands further to the south.
The Royal group of islands (Koh Tang and Koh Prins) offer some of the best sites for divers. They are a couple of hours boat ride from Shanoukville, individual centres can arrange over night trips. There are some beautiful corals and tropical fish with occassional big sea creatures. The popular Sting Ray Alley site is well named for its abundant sting rays.
The best time to dive here is June as there is less rainfall so visibility is better. The dry season is October - November. Visibility is generally good but as much of the area is unknown (especially the coast from Koh Kong north to the Thai boarder) it's a good idea to check-in with a local centre to find out about conditions, currents etc.
