More Information
The Liberty Wreck was a 120m long WW2 US Supply ship sunk by a Japanese torpedo in 1941. The ship lay beached for about 20 years until Mt Agung, a large active volcano on Bali's eastern point, erupted and pushed the wreck out some 30m from the shore.
There aren't many shore dives as amazing as this one....! Descend the sloping bottom from the shore and you'll come across this amazing artificial reef alive with colourful corals, sponges and crinoids. There are oriental sweetlips, circling jacks and colourful schools of fish. The wreck attracts Napoleon Wrasse and if you're lucky, even a mola-mola (the giant sunfish for which Bali is so well known).
Inside the wreck you can see the boilers, crew bathrooms and even some guns. Along the rails look out for brightly coloured nudibranchs, leaffish, scorpionfish and dragonets. The at the very bottom are two large gorgonians that often house little pygmy seahorses.
Maximum depth is 30m, visibility is often spectacular but can be reduced due water run-off from the river mouth and currents are usually low. Even on a bad day this dive is fantastic and definitely worth while!
