Dive Site Overview for Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea (PNG by the locals) is wild nature at its best! These exciting islands (around 600 in all) are home to a unique and fascinating culture and are surrounded by lush reef, atolls and beautiful fish.
PNG has the highest diversity of tropical fish and corals in the world! It hosts almost 10 times more species of corals than the Caribbean and around twice as many fish species as the Red Sea making the marine biodiversity here truly abundant!
There are huge vertical drop-offs just minutes away from the beach making diving very easily accessible, especially on the northern coastline and the southern regions of New Ireland and the Kavieng area.
In the more sheltered areas, such as Kimbe Bay (New Britain), delicate and colourful corals have grown to enormous sizes and host a vast array of tropical fish.
For divers seeking adventure there are hundreds of wrecks from large aeroplanes to submarines, many from WWII, scattered around the islands and in excellent condition. Top sites for wreck diving include Rabaul, Kavieng, Loloata (Port Moresby) and Madang.
There are many dive resorts on the islands offering day trips as well as liveaboard options. Diving is posibile all year round with water temperatures ranging from 26 - 31 degrees and visibility of up to 50 metres.
