Diving Overview for Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands of the South Pacific consist of over 922 sun-drenched volcanic islands, untouched from commercialized tourism and development. It’s rich history and biodiversity make this a true feast for all.
The Florida Islands offer some of the best Pacific diving with gorgeous reefs and fantastic wrecks from the Aaron Ward, an upright and intact destroyer full of guns and torpedo tubes, to the huge Kanawha oil tanker. You can dive the ancient lava tunnels, beautiful coral gardens around Sandfly Passage and numerous reefs and walls sounded with corals, tropical fish, sharks and other pelagics.
There are fantastic reefs and drop-offs around Njanjelakalau Island full of bumpheads, crocodile fish, huge tuna, gropers, sharks and other colourful reef critters. Munda is a more secluded group of islands surrounded by excellent reefs and marine life and is renowned for its WW2 wrecks that make for some awesome diving!
Iron Bottom Sound around Honiara, the capital of the Solomons, is an underwater graveyard of wrecks including destroyers, minesweepers, submarines, transporters, airplanes and troop carriers. These wrecks illustrate the terrific history of the Solomon Islands and have become part of the seabed now attracting a wide variety of marine life.
Water temperatures here range from a blissful 27-31°C, weather conditions are always warm with the best weather from April to October, wet season is from Dec – March. Some areas have strong currents and some dive sites, especially wrecks, are deep and require specific wreck/deep training. Several dive centres cater for tech diving.
