Diving Overview for Guatemala
Guatemala is a beautiful country with diverse landscape from volcanoes to rainforests, famous for its amazing coffee, friendly people and rich Mayan culture.
Although Guatemala is not really a dive destination –most divers will head over to Belize or Honduras –some diving is possible around Livingston on the Caribbean coast and Puerto Barrios on the Pacific coast as well as Lake Atitlan.
Try altitude diving in Lake Atitlan, one of the beautiful lakes in the world, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. You can see underwater lava formations and submerged trees and even search for the submerged Mayan village believed to have sat on a small island in the lake that sunk over 1,000 years ago.
There are several wrecks off the south coast of Guatemala near Las Lisas that are most accessible from December to May where you may also see migrating humpback whales and grey dolphins. Try El Barco Chino (the Chinese Boat) which carried Chinese immigrants and sank only a few miles from the shore.
Dive conditions vary throughout the year, Lake Atitlan is at altitude and water temperatures usually require a 7mm wetsuit, coastal diving is warmer although visibility is reduced during wet season and water conditions on the Pacific side can be a little rough off season -the best time to dive is from December to May.
