Dive Site Overview for Cyprus
Cyprus is an Eastern Mediterranean Island with alluring beaches, miles of vineyards and olive trees, orchards of citrus fruits and old stone villages bathed in sunshine where the pace of life is beyond relaxing.
Cyprus may not have the most vibrant marine life of the Mediterranean but it does offer some of the most fantastic wreck diving in the Med including the famous Zenobia wreck, considered one of the best in the world, as well as many caves and tunnels.
Diving is most popular in the South around Paphos which has great caves, sinkholes, blowholes and tunnels to explore, an artificial reef created from a helicopter and a fire engine as well as several wrecks and like the rest of Cyprus, the seabed is littered with ancient Roman artifacts such as pots and vases (amphorae).
The highlight of Larnaka is The Zenobia, a completely intact Swedish roll-on roll-off ferry sunk in 1980, sitting at 42m just 1km off the coast. This wreck is 200m long with over 100 articulated vehicles still with their original cargo on board. There are large schools of barracuda, amberjacks and tuna, conger eels and groupers all swimming through the wreck. You first see this wreck at 18m making it possible for novice divers to witness as well as experienced and technical divers to fully explore.
Around Larnaka there are several reefs to explore with interesting rock formations and many octopus –try Octopus Reef or Mushroom Rocks. There are several caves and tunnels to explore that make for more adventurous diving, some involve lowering yourself through a blowhole! Don’t miss the Chapel and Cyclops Cave for some good marine life and the HMS Cricket WW2 Gunboat.
There are several wrecks around Limassol including the open cargo ship Pharses 2 and several other more broken wrecks. The shore is full of caves, tunnels and blowholes that are excellent for underwater photography and unusual diving.
Water temperatures range from 18°C in January to a lovely 27°C during summer (July), visibility ranges from 10-40m and currents are usually mild.
