Dive Site Overview for France
France and is beautiful country rich in culture, fine cuisine, fabulous wine, glorious beaches, the world famous Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysees and the Louvre Museum not to mention some truly amazing diving.
Diving opportunities in France are vast and extend from the north and west coasts to the mediterranean south offering a range of temperatures and dive sites to choose from.
Cave diving is popular in France especially in the Dordogne/Lot region where there are some great caves and passages with fabulous clear waters. Try Emergence du Russel in the Dordogne Region which reaches depth of over 70m. North-Eastern France has many caves with typical blue pool resurgences, some caves are completely flooded and some contain sumps that break up the passages and lead to cathedral-like dry galleries –France really has caves to suit every level of diver!
The diving in France can be dependent on the weather and Atlantic swells during the autumn, winter and spring months, however the mediterranean coast in the south offers much more protected diving environments and is home to various fish and sea plants, coral reefs and walls, caverns and wrecks.
In southern France (the mediterranean) the diving area stretches from St Tropez to the Poqurelles and is a gem for divers looking to explore historical wrecks from World War 2. Dive the German munition barges in the Bay of Agay or the Espongole torpedo wreck in Cavalaire Bay both full on morays and congers, crayfish and schools of fish in warm clear waters. For a deep wreck try the Togo –a cargo ship sunk in 1918 during WW1 (50-56m deep) covered with gorgonias and well worth penetrating. Around La Londe there are some great wrecks including the 78m cargo ship ‘Le Donator’ and the nearby ‘Le Grec’ cargo vessel. In fact, the whole coastline is scattered with fantastic wreck diving opportunities.
Western France is has an abundance of marine life and is a great diving location for those who want to explore the habitat of local tunas, pollack and mackerel. The reefs in the west have some of the most amazing soft coral found in France.
Underwater visibility can often change in France but generally ranges from 10 to 30 metres. The best time to go scuba diving is between May and November where you can expect water temperatures in the region of 20+ degreesC along the exposed west coast, or between 20 and 30?C in the Mediterranean.
