Diving Overview for Malta

The islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino have some of the best diving in the Mediterranean with a selection of both amazing reefs and historic wrecks to explore. Most scuba diving in Malta is shore dive based, although there are numerous opportunities to do boat dives and even liveaboards.

Malta is a small but sunny limestone island offering some great underwater life, expect to see colourful Mediterranean species including wrasse, grouper, octopus and John Dory. If you are very lucky, you may encounter shy seahorses and stingrays.

Top dive sites in Malta include HMS Maori which can be found at Marsamxett harbour, the Um El Faroud wreck (a former oil tanker at over 115ft sunk in 1995) and Cirkewwa, a dive site with caverns, swim-throughs and drop-offs as well as a small cave with a statue of the Holy Mary and the wreck of the tugboat Rozi.

Gozo is home to the world-famous Blue Hole and Inland Sea dive sites which have spectacular topography and excellent marine life. You can also dive the Azure Window (a huge arch) and Fungus Rock (a rock in the shape of a mushroom) that house a rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Comino, the smaller of the three main islands, also has some great places to dive. One of these is Lantern Point which offers a spectacular underwater tunnel, known as the chimney and huge boulders. This dive site usually offers exceptionally good visibility.

Underwater visibility is generally excellent ranging from 10 to 35+ metres. The summer months offer water temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees centigrade with the winter being between 12 and 18 degrees.
