Dive Site Overview for Jordan
Jordan is a real land of contrasts from fertile valley to remote desert. Experience the magic of the Dead Sea –the lowest point on Earth at 410m below sea level and the beautiful Petra; one of the Seven Wonders of the World!
Most diving in Jordan happens in Aqaba to the North of the Red Sea where a fringing reef stretches all the way down towards the Saudi Arabian border. There are huge canyons, pinnacles and drop offs to explore with excellent visibility and a vast array of marine life –a photographers paradise!
There are opportunities for all level of diver from complete beginner to technical diving. Power Station and First Bay are just a few of the great reef sites with big drop offs and hundreds of colourful species. Garden eels are everywhere at Eel Garden and the gorgonias, torpedo and blue spotted rays and pennant fish around King Abdullah’s Reef are well worth exploring. Moon Valley is great place to find larger pelagics from Napoleon wrasse, unicorn fish, occasional sharks and turtles.
There are several wrecks including the Cedar Pride, a Lebanese freighter now covered with hard and soft corals and beautiful sea horses, and ‘The Tank’ –an American M42 Duster Anti-Aircraft vehicle.
June/July is the best time to spot migrating whale sharks and February is the most likely to spot manta rays.
The Gulf of Aqaba is usually calm with water temperatures of 19-20°C in winter and up to 26°C in summer. Most diving is shore based as the reef starts right at the shoreline so there are no long boat journeys needed. Diving is possible all year round with visibility averaging 30-45m –perfect of photography and videography! Air, nitrox, trimix and other blends are easily accessible here.
