Dive Site Overview for Oman

Oman sits between 3 different Seas; the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman and Arabian Gulf opening in to the Indian Ocean. It has over 3,000km of coastline with dramatic walls and drop-offs and superb marine life, it really is a little known gem in the diving world!

The marine life around Oman and the Sultanate is amazing, you can see everything from huge whale sharks, manta rays and turtles to tiny seahorses and colorful coral gardens. Be sure to try a night dive as there is a huge amount of phosphorescence that really lights up the water.

Fahal Island has excellent corals, a small cave swim-through and beautiful reefs which attract lots of barracuda, sharks, eagle rays and even the odd whale. There are lots of islands and site dives near Muscat that are well worth exploring including the Daymaniat Islands, Oman’s only marine reserve (permits required for diving here), which has fantastic displays of corals, colourful reef life, eagle rays and turtles.

Ever seen a baby turtle? Around Ras Al Had a marine turtle conservation area has been established to protect the thousands of turtles that arrive here to breed each year.

There several wrecks around the Sultanate, the most impressive is the 84m ‘Al Munnassir’ landing craft shipwreck in Bandar Khairan, near Muscat and see giant moray eels and corals and tropical fish from the near-by reef.

There are lots of opportunities for dolphin and whale watching from the shore or by boat, a common spot is Fahal Island. Watch dolphins dancing in the waves from the coast of Musandam in the North right down to Dhofar in the south. Up to 22 species of whale migrate through these waters between December and February including humpbacks, sperm whales and Orcas.

Visibility averages 15m, not quite as clear as the Red Sea but the marine life is equally spectacular and dive sites are quieter. Water temperatures can drop to 20°C in winter and rise to 28°C in summer and there are few strong currents making diving here a real pleasure!
