Diving Overview for Indiana
Indiana, located in the Widwestern region of the United States, is one of eight states that make up the Great Lakes region.
Indiana, although not generally regarded as a scuba diving destination, has several Lakes and quarries that are ideal for training or pleasant diving.
Blue Springs Quarry is over 60 feet deep and fed by beautifully clear underground springs making it the perfect location for certification and training dives. There are several other smaller lakes spread all around Indiana, including Dream Lake, Sunset Lake and White Rock, that are shallower but equally popular for diver training.
France Park is an old stone quarry filled with unusual artificats for divers to explore, including an old school bus from the 1940s, several motor vehicles and even an old set of train wheels. The main attraction at France Park is the unusual spoonbill sturgeon fish, also known as a paddlefish, which can grow upto 6 feet in length and weigh over 200 pounds. This unusual fish is considered to have developed over 20 millions of years ago making it a living fossil that helps to keep the quarry waters clear by feeding on plankton.
Diving is possible all year round in Indiana, a thick wetsuit is recommended as the freshwater temperatures change little over the seasons. Many dive centres organise regular trainging events as well as diving trips to other States or abroad.
