Diving Overview for Michigan

Michigan's nine underwater preserves include nearly 1,900 square miles of Great Lakes bottomland.

The Great Lakes that border Michigan from east to west are Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Head to the Straits of Mackinac for the greatest collection of recreation shipwrecks (all shallower than 130 ft) in Michigan.

Michigan's underwater preserves protect some of the region's most sensitive underwater resources. The preserve system, which was legally established in 1980 and is strictly observed by all divers, has created some fantastic diving opportunities with well preserved wrecks and clear waters. Original artifacts can still be seen at each wreck site including small ceramic cups, tools, silverware, ornaments, and other items.

The best time to dive is during the summer months, between April and October when the weather is warmer and light is good. You will require a full length wetsuit as the Great Lakes are pretty cold. Most of the popular dive sites are buoyed in the summer and many preserves offer easy shore-access diving.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: In the state of Michigan, it is a felony to remove or disturb artifacts in the Great Lakes. Anyone caught removing portholes, anchors, anchor chain, or other "souvenirs" will have their boats, cars, and equipment confiscated and will face up to two years imprisonment and stiff fines.
